Oil Spill remediation Services – Crack in the oil tank

Background: Crack in the oil tank in the back garden led to 800l of oil to leak out. Damage Caused: -Gross contamination of soil & fill material beneath and surrounding over ground oil storage tank. -Possible migration of contaminant plume to reach the building/neighbouring property/groundwater supply. Verde’s Remediation Programme to Date Emergency Works: -Excavation of an interception trench. -Installation of a temporary heating system by a registered OFTEC. Enabling Works & Source Removal -Site preparation works including placement of skips, erection of fencing and safety signage. -Break out, removal and disposal of the impacted oil tank base. -Excavation of identified contaminated soil and fill material from the rear garden area. In-Situ Treatment -A Granulated Activated Carbon filter (GAC) was installed at the property to periodically pump and filter perched water at the site. -Implementation of a bioremediation programme to treat residual contamination to the sides and base of the excavations with the application of specialised treatment solutions. Reinstatement -Reinstatement of excavated areas using granular sub base material. -Installation of a bentonite barrier along the boundary. -Installation of a trench to house the duct & feed line from the new tank location to the boiler. -Reinstatement of top soil & lawn turf atop the excavated areas. -Rebuilding oil tank base. -Reconnection of oil tank & associated pipework and re-commissioning of heating system.

Oil leak caused by a screw puncturing the oil feedline

Project: Oil Spill remediation Services – Oil feedline pierced by a screw Location: Gortahork, Co. Donegal Duration: 1 Month with works ongoing Background Sections of flooring were cut in the homeowner’s living room to make connections to the heating pipes to add an additional radiator. However, when the flooring was being put back it was fixed with screws, one of which pierced the oil feed line. Damage Caused -Strong oil odour in the living room. -Moderate oil odour in an upstairs bathroom. -Contamination impact to wooden floor sections and structures to the suspended timber floor in the Living Room, the stone built fireplace, the concrete subfloor in the living room and the concrete base to support the stone built fireplace. -Contamination impact to soil/fill beneath the living room. Verde’s Remediation Programme to Date Emergency Mitigation Works -Installation of a vapour extraction unit to reduce oil odours in the living room. Emergency works -Structural Engineer appointed. -Removal of the oil fired stove. -Removal of the stone built fireplace. -Removal of wood flooring and support joists. -Break out, remove and dispose of large concrete base beneath the stone built fireplace and impacted concrete subfloor. -Excavate, remove and dispose of impacted soil and fill material beneath the living room.

Loss of home heating oil

Damage Caused - Oil contamination confirmed in the vicinity of the oil tank from surface to approximately 1.10mBGL. - Elevated PID readings and strong oil odours encountered in sampled material. Verde’s Remediation Programme to Date Enabling Works & Source Removal -Temporary disconnection of the external boiler. -Breakout and disposal of the existing oil tank support structure. -Excavation of contaminated soil and fill material from below the concrete apron at the rear of the house. - 7 tonnes of contaminated soil and concrete requiree disposal from the site. - Application of a controlled programme of in-situ chemical and biological treatment solutions to target oil contamination at depth. - Interim sampling undertaken to determine the effectiveness of in-situ treatments. - Excavated material removed for appropriate disposal and/or treatment at a licensed facility.

Project: Oil Spill remediation Services – loss of home heating oil. The insured realised they had lost a quantity of oil – volume unknown, with the source of the leak not found. Location: Drogheda, Co. Louth Duration: 3 Months Damage Caused: Contamination encountered in concrete, soil and fill material in the vicinity of the oil storage tank and external boiler. Verde’s Remediation Programme Emergency Works Temporary disconnection and removal of oil tank and boiler to facilitate remedial works. Set up of a temporary heating system for duration of works. Enabling Works Breakout and removal of the oil tank base and concrete boiler base. Temporary removal of brick paving adjacent to the south boundary wall. Excavation and disposal of contaminated material adjacent to the south boundary and up to the east wall of the toilet/utility extension. Remedial Works Application of a controlled programme of in-situ chemical and biological treatment solutions to target residual contamination at depth. Reinstatement Works Reinstatement of soil and fill materials to ground level. Reinstatement of removed section of brick paving near the south boundary. Construction of a concrete base for the external boiler in compliance with OFTEC guidelines. Reinstatement of oil tank base in compliance with OFTEC guidelines. Final validation sampling undertaken. Project: Oil Spill Remediation Services – leaking oil feedline located near the internal boiler unit in the utility room. Location: Maynooth, Co. Kildare Duration: 5 Months Damage Caused Physical and analytical evidence of oil contamination was encountered in concrete and soil and fill material beneath the utility room and against the west wall of the kitchen. Internal oil odours encountered. Verde’s Remediation Programme Enabling Works Temporary disconnection of the existing boiler and decommissioning of the heating system. Temporary heating system was set up for the duration of the remediation programme. Removal of a section of kitchen units. Breakout and removal of sections of concrete floor in the utility room and kitchen. Excavation and disposal of contaminated material in the kitchen and utility room. Remedial Works Controlled programme of in-situ chemical and biological treatments were undertaken in the affected areas in an attempt to target residual contamination at depth. Removal of localised sections of blockwork between the utility room and the kitchen impacted by oil contamination. Treated and sealed rising blockwork below floor level in order to prevent future oil odours. Reinstatement Backfilling of excavated areas using granular sub-base material compacted at 150mm intervals. Reinstatement of previously removed concrete floor sections. Reconnection and recommissioning of the heating system by an OFTEC registered plumber. Final validation sampling exercise undertaken to examine soil quality at the previously affected areas.

Location: Wicklow Town Duration: 4 months Year: 2019 Damage Caused •Physical and analytical evidence of oil contamination encountered in soils and fill material in the vicinity of the boiler house and soil in the garden area surrounding the boiler house with elevated PID readings and strong oil odours encountered from surface to 1.70mBGL. •Contamination impact to concrete floor of the boiler house with strong oil odours and elevated PID readings. Verde’s Remediation Programme Enabling Works •Underpin section of north boundary wall to allow excavation of contaminated soil and fill material at depth. •Demolition of the existing boiler house structure. •Breakout and removal of current oil tank support structure. •Temporary disconnection of the oil tank and boiler unit. Remedial Works •Breakout and removal of contaminated concrete floor inside the boiler house. •Excavation of identified contaminated soil and fill material from beneath/surrounding the boiler house. •Treatment of residual contamination at depth using a combination of in-situ chemical and biological treatments. •All excavated material was removed for appropriate disposal and/or treatment at a licenced facility. Reinstatement •New oil tank, oil tank base and new cabin pack oil boiler in compliance with building and fire regulations and in compliance with OFTEC guidelines. •Firewall erected between the oil boiler unit and oil storage tank as appropriate. •Reinstatement of excavated areas using granular sub-base material. •Reinstatement of areas of lawn and soft landscaping with topsoil and lawn seed. •Final validation sampling exercise undertaken to examine soil quality at the previously affected areas.

Location - Belfast, Northern Ireland Duration - 12 Months Damage Caused Strong oil odours throughout the ground floor, with PID readings of up to 13.5ppm in the ambient air in the kitchen. A PID reading of up to 154ppm was detected at the base of the stairs. A PID reading of 7.3ppm was noted at the hand basin waste pipe in the WC. Mitigation Works Installation of Vapour Extraction Unit (VEU), in the air space/void beneath the precast floor panels to reduce internal oil odours. Remediation Works Break out of concrete screed in the downstairs of the property. Structural works conducted according to advice of a structural engineer. All excavated material removed for appropriate disposal and/or treatment to a licensed facility. In situ Treatment Implementation of a bioremediation programme to treat soil/fill material that could not be feasibly excavated. Installation of inoculation pipework to treat soils at depth. Installation of a soil vapour extraction system. Application of specialised bioremediation treatment solutions to treat soil/fill that cannot be excavated. Reinstatement Removal of the inoculation pipework. Removal of the soil vapour extraction system. Reinstatement of the block infill between the precast concrete tee beams. Reinstatement of the radon barrier. Reinstatement of concrete floor screed and stud work. Validation Sampling A final sampling exercise was undertaken to examine soil, and interior air quality at the previously affected areas.
